Seabeck

Scenic Beach State Park

The Scenic Beach State Park Campus offers children a warm and welcoming forest school experience where friendships grow alongside a deep connection to the natural world. Surrounded by towering trees, winding trails, the saltwater shoreline of Hood Canal, and sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains, this campus invites children to explore, wonder, and learn together in the beauty of Seabeck. At Scenic Beach, children build meaningful relationships with one another, their teachers, and the land through imaginative play, shared adventure, and the everyday rhythms of outdoor learning.

Scenic Beach State Park

Campus Programs

At forest preschool the children visit the same woodland on a regular basis and are given the freedom to play, opportunity to explore and learn about the natural environment, and support while learning how to handle risks, solve problems, and cooperate with their peers. Preschool runs all year, where children learn and play in the woods in all weather: sun, rain, snow, warm and cold, (barring high winds or other extreme weather). As the forest is ever changing, each day brings new and different exploration opportunities. Children play, learn boundaries – both physical and social - grow in confidence, and become self-starters. Children in this environment learn that there are different ways of solving problems and they develop their critical thinking skills daily. Learn more about Magnolia's Forest Preschool program.

Campus Director

Nate Clay

Campus Director
nate@magnoliaforestpreschool.com

Since Nate joined the Magnolia team at Kitsap Memorial Campus in July of 2022, he has found it extremely empowering for children to know that their voices are heard, understood, and important to those who listen. He was promoted to Waldkinder Director in the fall of 2024 and continues to run our seasonal camps.

Nate spent much of his childhood fascinated by biology. Many of his birthday presents were anatomical models. Because his parents nurtured and encouraged these interests, he developed a long-standing passion for biology, wildlife, ecology, and of course, learning! All things that lend themselves well to forest school! Nate also received a bachelors in zoology from Oregon State University in 2025, giving him the opportunity to share his knowledge of wildlife as it appears in the forest.

In his free time, Nate enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, baking, playing with his dogs (Shroomy and Luna), making silly voices for stories, and creative writing.

Jenny Stokes

Founder & Executive Director of Playwork

Jenny Stokes

Founder & Executive Director of Playwork

Jenny began her teaching career in 1995 in a small Arkansas town and has since taught preschool through college in Arkansas, Texas, and Washington states.  She holds a Masters in Early Childhood and Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University, and a BFA in Art Education from Baylor University.

Jenny is a fierce advocate for a child’s right to play and believes that truly play-based programs, like Magnolia, provide the best opportunity for young children to be creative, compassionate learners who embrace themselves and others with empathy, curiosity and joy.   What follows are self-regulation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Her belief that social-emotional development is the leading indicator of long-term school success informs her position as an educator.  Her mission is to graduate children from Magnolia who are not only academically successful but who also fully understand themselves and their value in our world.  And who love to learn!  She is a teacher first and believes that the outdoor environment is an ideal place for a child’s imagination to soar and relationships to flourish.

Jenny loves to crochet and knit children's book characters, and can be found doing so amongst the hundreds of children's books that line her office shelves.

Jenny has three sons, Connor, Sean, and Jackson, and a daughter, Grace.  One of her favorite roles is “Bunny” to her precious grandson, Samuel. And her cheeky Irish Setter, Clover Sue, keeps her on her toes with a sense of humor!   Jenny will forever be grateful for her late husband, Bob, who supplied her with constant laughter and believed in her dream of starting a “little preschool in the woods” so many years ago.  Without his love and support, none of this would have been possible.

Born and raised in small-town Iowa, Taylor has always been fascinated by the ability of the environment to influence how we develop, think, and feel. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture with a minor in psychology and a Master of Landscape Architecture with an emphasis on environmental psychology and risky play, both from Iowa State University. She is a member of the International Play Association, the United States Play Coalition, and the Washington Nature Preschool Association.

Taylor has spent much of her life working with children, and she strives to continue to see the world with the wonder and joy of a child. She loves to climb, play, and spend time in nature, is a passionate musician, and starts every day with a strong cup of coffee and a song.

Assistant Site Director

Katie’s (she/her) roots lie right here in the PNW! She was born and raised on Whidbey Island and followed her dad’s footsteps by joining the Navy as an Information Systems Technician-Reservist in 2014. Hoping to be more involved with her two kids, Jordan & Eden, Katie separated from the Navy after 9 years and continued as a Certified Nurses Assistant while her high-school-sweetheart husband, Mike, is active duty here in Bangor, WA.

Katie found Magnolia when her son was 2.5 years old. After a family tour where she got to see and experience verbal mapping first hand, her son was signed up the next day. Katie fell in love with the philosophy of Magnolia and started as a substitute in September 2023 and was promoted to a regular teaching position in 2024. Katie is now considering a complete career shift from Nursing to Early Childhood Education and is researching degrees and programs at local colleges.

Katie spends most of her time pretending to be dinosaurs with her son, but on rare occasions can be found reading, singing karaoke with friends, or exploring different parks with her family.

Alex and her husband Benjamin are parents to five kiddos all of whom have attended Magnolia! She has a deep love of learning and a passion for observing and facilitating lifelong learning in children. Magnolia has inspired and forever changed their family. The Magnolia philosophy has directly impacted their parenting and shifted the family dynamic in completely unexpected ways. Alex joined the Magnolia team as a teacher and then as the Parent Liaison in order to share the Magnolia Method with children and their families.

Alex is thrilled to be experiencing the forest alongside children as they grow and develop in curiosity and insight together.

“In the safety and freedom of the woods, [my child’s] little voice started asking for things she needed – and getting those needs met. Through climbing, exploring the natural world around her, her confidence grew. Magnolia’s style makes room for that.”
“One of the biggest leaps has been [my child’s] ability to communicate her emotions. Instead of endless tantrums or guessing games, [my child] has been able to clearly tell me what she’s feeling. Being able to identify a feeling is one of the first steps to working through it for her. This is a big deal in our everyday life, and I believe it’s truly added to her life in a dynamic manner. At Magnolia, I know I have a group of other caring adults in her life to help her learn to trust herself and others, during those difficult life moments.”
“ We look forward to the year, as well as the adventures of the K-8th program to follow. I want [my child] to continue to grow and learn to trust herself and grow into a confident child, and eventually young woman, with respect for life, others and the world around her. Those values are echoed by this school as well. Having the freedom to be 100% herself in a safe environment as she discovers who she is priceless.”
“Now, as a first time parent, I’ll admit, I had my doubts when it came to the theory behind child-lead learning, but I’m now sold on it. The confidence gained by learning to climb a rock transfers over to facing new learning milestones, like counting. [My child’s] imagination is free to expand with simple tools and toys, friends, fresh air, and the occasional snow ball. Imagination is the mother of invention. [My child] knows School is a safe place to make mistakes, explore, and grow.”
“I cannot say enough how much my child has grown since school started in September! She went from crying at drop off and clinging to a teacher, to confidently walking to a teacher at the start of a school day and strutting back at pick up.”
“[My child] has great stamina! Before Magnolia she wouldn’t walk very far and now she is able to hike up to 3 miles! She also has a longer attention span. She will stick with a task for 45 min or an hour. Again, before school she would flit from activity to activity.”
